Dear Supporters,
May 24th will mark the 10th anniversary of the car bomb assassination attempt on Earth First! organizers Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney. Many of you will remember the horror of that day when you first learned that nonviolent activists -- people like yourselves -- had been bombed while they organized protests against the cut-and-run logging of the last of the redwood forest. Then came the chilling headlines, "Bomb Victims Arrested!" Many of you kept watch at Highland Hospital while Judi Bari, under armed guard, fought for her life despite the devastating injuries that would leave her permanently disabled and in excruciating pain for the rest of her life. Hundreds of you protested at Oakland Police headquarters, demanding Darryl's immediate release from jail and a thorough investigation and search for the bomber(s). And many more of you picked up the work that fell from Judi Bari's hands that day. You threw yourselves into organizing Redwood Summer, the grassroots campaign that brought thousands to California's Northcoast and put the protection of old-growth forests on the national agenda. The 10th AnniversaryThe Redwood Summer Justice Project is planning major events in Berkeley and San Francisco to commemorate the anniversary of the bombing and to step up our demands for justice. (See enclosed flyer.) Please join us, or organize a solidarity demonstration in front of your local FBI office. Also to mark the 10th anniversary, we present "Earth First! & Labor: Alliance for Sustainable Communities" a brand new pamphlet that spotlights Judi's focus on labor analysis and organizing with forestry workers. The book also includes "But What About Jobs?" Judi's proposed forest rehabilitation jobs program for the Headwaters Forest. Update on the Civil Rights CaseWe also have important news on the bombing case, and once again ask for your help as this crucial civil rights case comes to trial.Fresh from our victory in the Court of Appeals, we returned to district court last December where Judge Claudia Wilken scheduled discovery negotiations and a mandatory settlement conference. Faced with a court-ordered settlement talks, in February we presented these demands to the government defendants: • that Oakland Police and the FBI release their entire investigative files on Earth First!Called a demand for "unconditional surrender" by FBI lawyer Joe Sher (overheard in the hallway outside the court), there's little hope our settlement proposal will be met. At our next court date -- Friday, May 5th at 1:30 p.m. in federal district court in Oakland-- we expect Judge Wilken will set a trial date for mid-2001. At last! This is the time when the expenses of a case like this really begin to skyrocket. A host of final depositions (at $700-$1,000 each), huge expert witness preparation and expenses, exhibit preparation, astronomical printing and telephone costs, more legal researcher hours -- when you add it all up it gets really scary. (The Karen Silkwood case cost over $300,000 the year of trial, and that was in 1974. Yikes!) We would never have made it this far without your
support. So once again we ask you to do what you've always done --
make an Earth First! victory over the FBI possible. Please contribute
generously of your resources, both financial and political and keep us
on the road to ...
Justice for Judi Bari & Darryl Cherney!
